Artist Megan Perkins provides adults and mature teens of all skill levels the opportunity to learn the essence of sketching outdoors. The focus will be on utilizing expressive lines and drawing houses as well as general tips for sketching. Students will make portraits of a neighborhood home or building in a loose and creative way.

Urban Sketching: Riverfront Park:

Sketch Out at Riverfront Park

Join Megan Perkins at the Riverfront Park to learn about urban sketching and how to capture the story of a place by drawing and painting on location. Finish the class with a spread in your sketchbook that will remind you of the time you spent in this beautiful park every time you look at it. All skill levels welcome! Students have the option of displaying their work alongside Megan’s at the Pavilion Art Space in Riverfront Park. If that is desired, please bring loose leaf paper or a sketchbook where the pages can be torn out for your sketching surface.

Students will provide their own supplies.


Absolute minimum: a sketchbook or loose leaf paper with a rigid backing to provide support (clips recommended to secure the paper to the board), pencil, eraser. Other drawing tools as desired: pens, colored pencils, markers, watercolor pencils, water soluble pens, etc. 

A watercolor set with paints, brushes, cup for water, and paper towels is suggested if the student wants to paint. Megan will be doing a sketching demo that includes watercolor. If student desires to use watercolor, paper must be at least 90 lb watercolor or mixed media paper or sketchbook. Princeton Snap brushes are recommended as good, affordable starter brushes. Sizes 6 and 12 are recommended.

Please prepare to be out in warm weather-water bottle, sunscreen, hat, and comfortable shoes are recommended. If student has difficulty sitting on the ground or on various surfaces at Riverfront park, please bring a folding stool or camp chair.

Creating Mood in a Landscape

Learn how time of day, color, lighting, and composition all work together to create mood in a landscape, whether that is happy and bright, dramatic, or tranquil. Students will learn from local teaching artist Megan Perkins to complete multiple studies using techniques to alter mood while using the same reference image, then you will complete a final painting based on your favorite study. Please bring a reference picture to work from.

Window Swap

Interested in warming up for plein air (drawing/painting outside) season? In this class, we will use the website “Window Swap” as our inspiration. People from all around the world submit video clips of the view from their window. Travel the world from your chair! Students will learn how to simplify a scene, draw accurately and interpret a video into a sketch. Class can be followed up with the urban sketching/plein air classes that will be offered in the summer.

Sketchbook Habit

Experience the joy of playing in your sketchbook. In this class we will explore techniques such as notan, blind contour, hatching, color blocking, and more as a route to making work that improves our skills while embracing fun and defeating the inner critique. The goal is to learn ways to make art in small bits of time regularly so that you can make art every day. Please note, you WILL be expected to work in your sketchbook between class sessions. How can you develop a habit without practice? :) (smiley face can be omitted if desired)

4 sessions

April 10th, 24th, (We SKIP the 17th!), May 1st and 8th, 5:30-7:30

You can register for this class at the Corbin Art Center.

Supplies:

A sketchbook, an assortment of pens (ballpoint, sharpie, art pens like my Pentel pocketbrush, or fountain pens, etc), pencil, eraser, a variety of media are welcome-things like colored pencils, watercolor pencils, pastels and or watercolors with attendant brushes, water container and paper towels. The most minimal kit is a sketchbook with something to draw with.

Skies have a huge impact on a painting, sometimes taking up a large amount of the paper, and dramatically affecting the mood and atmosphere of the work. The sky should be considered carefully when planning a painting. In this class, led by Spokane artist Megan Perkins, students will tackle painting the sky - with clouds, mist, full of color, or as a more neutral backdrop with a focus on being expressive and allowing the medium of watercolor to do its magic.

There will be a break for lunch. Bring your own and grab lunch at one of the neighborhood spots!

Intro to Easy Mixed Media

February 12, 19, 26 and March 5, 2022

 

The first week is drawing: break out all of those fancy markers you bought on sale but have been too afraid to use! We’ll combine those with pencils, pens, crayons and more to make colorful, expressive drawings! The second week is collage: gather supplies from your junk mail, magazines, scrap book paper and more to make a collage image. Enjoy the contrast in colors, patterns, and texture!  For the third week we explore watercolor: splash some paint around and experiment with making puddles of color, “drawing” with paint and more.  In our final week students learn to combine two or even three of the different mediums together to make a final piece. We’ll have fun drawing over collage, putting paint over a drawing or collage. It’ll be a free for all!

Daily Drawing- 4 sessions with artist Megan Perkins during which she demonstrates drawing techniques, styles and tools to inspire you to draw daily. She will discuss equipment, such as pens, pencils, markers, crayons, etc and the way they affect the look of a drawing. She will share tips and exercises to help students learn to draw such as blind contour, negative space, and measuring. Students will be encouraged to draw daily between class sessions and share their work in order to develop a drawing habit to grow their skills and enhance their life.

Come sketch at High Bridge Park as part of Spokane Parks & Recreation's planning for the Latah-Hangman trail/conservation project.
